An odourless substance is present in the undamaged tissue – alin (about 0.3%), and when the tissue is damaged, under the influence of the enzyme alinase, alin is converted into allicin, from which the characteristic odour originates. Other ingredients are: vitamin C, B1, B2, niacin, provitamin A, sulphur, minerals, etc. The active substance garlic (allicin) has antibacterial and anti-fungal effects. Garlic can be used as a diaphoretic (to stimulate sweating), expectorant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, bacteriostatic, hypotensive, anthelmintic and anti-fungal. In folk medicine, its most famous effect is on lowering the concentration of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It indirectly affects the reduction of blood pressure and regulates the work of the digestive organs. It increases the body’s resistance and prevents premature symptoms of aging and atherosclerosis. It has a beneficial effect on colds, and it is also given for intestinal parasites. Garlic is also used in cosmetics, especially for strengthening hair roots and treating seborrheic skin.
